Case Study: Technical Pool Installation for a Small Yard

At Master Pools, we take great pride in crafting exceptional fibreglass pools that turn our clients’ backyard visions into a reality. Recently, we faced a unique and challenging project for Emily and Ashley in Pakenham. They were looking to install a 6.5m x 2.5m Florentina pool in a Twilight colour, as well as a 2.2m x 1.8m spa. Their small yard, coupled with an easement at the rear of the property, posed significant constraints on our standard process. Nevertheless, our team was determined to create a remarkable fibreglass pool in Pakenham for our clients, despite the limited space and close proximity to the house.

Limited Space and House Footing Protection

Emily and Ashley’s property in Pakenham presented us with a substantial challenge due to the small yard and proximity of the desired pool area to the house. The 2.5m wide pool and spa they envisioned would leave a mere 0.7m gap between the pool and the house. Before any pool construction could begin, we had to address the potential risk of undermining the house’s footings during excavation.

Engineer-Designed Protection Piers

To tackle this challenge, we enlisted the expertise of an engineer who devised a solution to support the house’s footings. We drilled holes at a depth of 3.4m and had them thoroughly inspected by the building surveyor. Following the inspections, we poured concrete into the holes and inserted steel cages, adhering to the engineer’s specifications. These protection piers were strategically installed to ensure that the house’s foundation remained intact throughout the excavation and pool installation process.

Careful Execution in Two Stages

Due to the limited space and access, the installation of the protection piers had to be carried out in two stages. We carefully planned the drilling process, completing every other pier on the first day and returning a few days later to finish the remaining piers. This method allowed us to maintain stability whilst navigating the space constraints. To ensure seamless execution, our team of experts carefully planned the drilling process, taking into account the unique challenges posed by the site’s conditions.

Overcoming Limited Access for Excavation

With access limited to just 1m, we had to employ innovative techniques for the pool excavation. Our team utilised a small 1.7T excavator to dig the pool hole, as well as motorised wheelbarrows to efficiently transport excavated soil out of the yard, facilitating a smooth and timely pool installation process. Despite the tight space constraints, our commitment to quality planning and execution ensured a successful outcome for Emily and Ashley’s dream fibreglass pool in Pakenham.
