How Long Does It Take to Build a Fibreglass Pool in Melbourne?

“I’d love to have a pool in time for summer, but how long does the whole process actually take?”

It’s one of the most common questions we hear at Master Pools, and the answer depends on a few things. The physical installation of a fibreglass pool only takes around two days, but the full journey from first enquiry to first swim typically spans 4 to 8 weeks depending on council approvals, site conditions, and the time of year.

Here’s a breakdown of what’s involved at each stage so you can plan with confidence.

Stage 1: Choosing Your Pool (Week 1)

Before anything else, you need to decide on the right pool for your property and your family. That means considering the shape, size, and colour of the pool shell, how it fits your backyard, and what lifestyle features matter most to you.

With 43 Aqua Technics fibreglass pool designs to choose from, and 11 Crystallite ColourGuard colours, there’s plenty of range to work with. If you’re unsure where to start, visiting our Display Centre in Cranbourne West is a great way to see working pools in person and get a feel for what suits your space.

You might also want to think about whether you’d like a pool and spa combination, integrated heating, or additional features like LED lighting and robotic cleaners.

Stage 2: Site Visit and Consultation (Week 1–2)

Once you’ve made an enquiry, our team will arrange a free on-site consultation to assess your property. This is where we look at backyard dimensions and layout, access for excavation equipment and crane delivery, soil conditions and any potential challenges such as rock, slope, or tight access, as well as how the pool will sit alongside your landscaping, fencing, and outdoor living plans.

This step is essential. Identifying access issues or site challenges early means there are no surprises once construction begins.

Melbourne’s southeastern suburbs, Bayside, and the Mornington Peninsula all have their own quirks when it comes to pool installation. Properties in areas like Beaumaris and Brighton often have tight access, while suburbs like Sandhurst have specific approval requirements from the Sandhurst Club before any pool construction can begin. Having a fibreglass pool builder who knows the local area makes a real difference.

Stage 3: Contract, Permits, and Preparation (Weeks 2–5)

Once you’ve chosen your pool and signed a contract, your pool builder gets to work behind the scenes. This is usually the longest part of the process, but it’s also the part you don’t have to worry about because we handle it all for you.

During this stage, we take care of engineering reports and building permit applications through your local council, ordering your Aqua Technics fibreglass pool shell, booking excavation equipment, trucks, and cranes, scheduling electricians and other trades, and managing any site-specific permits or approvals.

Council permit timeframes vary across Melbourne, but most are processed within 3 to 4 weeks. Some councils are faster, some slower, and this is the part of the timeline that’s hardest to predict.

Top tip: Allow at least one month from signing your contract before construction begins. This gives enough lead time for the pool shell to arrive and permits to be approved.

Stage 4: Fibreglass Pool Installation (Days 1–2)

This is the part that surprises most people. Once all the planning and approvals are done, the actual fibreglass pool installation happens fast.

Day 1 — Excavation The crew arrives with excavation equipment to dig out the pool cavity. There’s a lot of measuring, planning, and soil removal involved, and depending on access and soil conditions, this stage may take one to two days.

Day 2 — Pool Shell Installation The fibreglass pool shell is delivered and craned into position. Once it’s in the ground, the team fills it with water, installs your filtration and pump system, connects the salt chlorinator, sets up LED pool lighting, and connects solar or gas heating if applicable.

Within 48 hours you go from a hole in the ground to a fully installed fibreglass pool. That speed is one of the biggest advantages fibreglass has over concrete, which can take three to six months to complete.

Stage 5: Handover and Water Balancing (Week 1 After Install)

After installation, the pool needs a few days for the water chemistry to balance before you can swim. During this time, we’ll book a handover visit where our team walks you through everything you need to know about maintaining your pool, caring for your filtration and chlorination system, and getting the most out of your equipment.

This is also where you can ask any remaining questions. We want you to feel completely confident looking after your pool from day one.

Stage 6: Paving, Landscaping, and Fencing (Weeks 2–4 After Install)

Once the pool is in, the surrounding work begins. This includes paving or decking around the pool, landscaping and garden beds, and compliant pool safety fencing.

We can recommend trusted landscaping partners and pool fencing specialists to keep this stage moving smoothly. If you plan these elements from the start, rather than after the pool goes in, the whole process runs much more efficiently.

It’s worth thinking about your backyard as a complete outdoor space from the beginning. That way, you can allow for entertaining areas, garden features, play space for the kids, and everything else that makes the pool area feel finished.

How Long Does a Fibreglass Pool Take vs Concrete?

One of the biggest advantages of choosing a fibreglass pool is the speed of installation. Here’s how they compare:

Fibreglass PoolConcrete Pool
Physical installation1–2 days3–6 months
Total project (enquiry to swim)4–8 weeks4–8 months
Disruption to your propertyMinimalSignificant
Ready for landscapingWithin daysWeeks after completion

Because fibreglass pool shells are manufactured off-site by Aqua Technics, the on-site work is dramatically reduced. There’s no waiting for concrete to cure, no tiling, and far less mess.

When Should You Start Planning?

If you want to be swimming by summer, don’t wait until the warm weather arrives. The busiest period for fibreglass pool builders across Melbourne runs from September through to February, and installation slots fill up quickly.

The smartest approach is to start your enquiry between March and July. This gives you plenty of time for the consultation, council approvals, installation, and all the finishing work around the pool before the weather heats up.

Keep in mind that it’s not just fibreglass pool builders who get busy over summer. Landscapers, pavers, and fencing contractors are all in high demand too. Getting in early means your entire backyard project stays on schedule.

We’re currently booking installations for the 2026/7 summer season, so if you’ve been thinking about a pool, now is the time to get the ball rolling.
