Small Pool Ideas for a Small Backyard

Tips from Professional Fibreglass Pool Builders in Melbourne

A small backyard doesn’t mean you have to miss out on a pool. In fact, some of our favourite installations across Melbourne have been on compact blocks where the pool has completely changed how the family uses their outdoor space.

Small fibreglass pools and plunge pools are one of the most popular requests we get at Master Pools, and with good reason. They’re quicker to heat, more affordable to run, and with the right design they can make a backyard feel bigger than it actually is.

Here’s what you need to know about choosing and installing a small fibreglass pool in Melbourne.

What Size Pool Will Fit a Small Backyard?

Before you start browsing pool designs, it helps to understand what space you actually have to work with. A common mistake is measuring the backyard and assuming the pool can take up most of it, but there are a few things to factor in first.

Council setback requirements mean you’ll typically need at least one metre between the pool and your boundary fence or easement. On top of that, you’ll need room for compliant pool safety fencing, paving or decking around the pool, and enough clearance so that outdoor furniture, play equipment, or garden features can’t be used to climb over the pool fence.

It’s also worth thinking about what else you want from the space. Do you need room for a lawn area for pets or kids? An outdoor dining spot? A garden bed along the fence line? These all chip away at the available footprint, so it pays to think about the whole backyard, not just the pool.

If you’re not sure what will fit, we’d suggest booking a free site visit. Our team can measure up, check access, and recommend the best pool size for your property.

How to Choose the Right Small Pool

Not all small pools are created equal. The right one for you depends on how you want to use it and how your backyard is laid out.

Think about the entry position. Where the steps sit in relation to your back door or entertaining area can make a big difference to the flow of your outdoor space. A pool with the entry closest to the house creates a natural connection between indoors and out, and can actually make the pool feel larger because it draws you through the space.

Consider what you’ll use it for. A pool for cooling off and relaxing with friends on the weekend needs different features to one where the kids will learn to swim. Bench seating, depth, and overall shape all play a role. Some small pools pack in full-length benches and spa jet provisions, while others prioritise open swim space.

Don’t forget the resale value. A well-positioned pool that flows naturally from the house is one of the simplest ways to add value to a Melbourne property. Planning the layout carefully from the start pays off in the long run.

What Colour Works Best for a Small Pool?

Colour choice can have a surprising impact on how big or small your pool feels. Here are a few things to keep in mind:

Lighter colours reflect sunlight and draw your eye to the depth of the water, which can make a small pool appear larger than it is. Colours like Silvermist, Platinum, and Sky Blue work well for creating that bright, open feel.

Darker colours create a mirror effect that reflects the surrounding landscaping, fencing, and sky. If your pool is framed by lush planting or architectural screening, a darker colour like Graphite or Moonlight can actually make the space feel more expansive. Combined with lighter paving and coping, it’s a striking combination.

The one thing to watch is glare. A very light pool paired with light-coloured paving can create a washed-out look on sunny days. Mixing light and dark, such as a lighter pool with darker coping, or a darker pool with pale surrounds, tends to give the best result.

Whichever colour you choose, our Crystallite ColourGuard finish comes with a lifetime anti-fade guarantee, so it stays vibrant for years.

Getting the Most From a Small Pool

A smaller pool doesn’t mean a smaller experience. There are a few easy ways to make the most of the space:

Heating

One of the biggest advantages of a small pool is that it’s significantly cheaper to heat. A heat pump can extend your swimming season well into autumn and start it earlier in spring. Pair it with a Sunlover pool cover to retain heat overnight, and you can comfortably swim from September through to May in Melbourne.

Lighting

LED pool lighting makes a huge difference to how your pool looks and feels after dark. Underwater LEDs create a warm glow that extends the usability of the pool area into the evening, whether you’re swimming or just sitting poolside.

Landscaping

Smart landscaping around a small pool can make the space feel twice as big. Think vertical planting along fence lines, low-profile garden beds that don’t encroach on usable space, and consistent materials like timber decking or natural stone that create a cohesive look. A few well-placed plants can soften the fencing and make the whole area feel more inviting.

Pool Covers

A quality pool cover reduces evaporation, keeps heat in, and cuts down on maintenance. For a small pool, the running costs are already lower, and a cover brings them down even further.

Swimming Year-Round in Melbourne

Melbourne’s climate is perfect for getting more out of a heated small pool. Because there’s less water to warm up, the running costs stay manageable even through the cooler months. A heat pump paired with a Sunlover pool cover is the most energy-efficient combination delivering climate friendly efficiencies, and many of our customers are surprised at how affordable it is to keep a small pool at a comfortable temperature from early spring through to late autumn.

For pools with bench seating like the Latina, you can also add spa jets to create a hydrotherapy zone, giving you the benefits of a spa and a pool in one compact package.

What If My Backyard Has Limited Access?

Small backyards often come with narrow side access, and that’s something we deal with regularly. A fibreglass pool can be installed in almost any backyard, but if the access to your property is less than 2 metres wide, it may require a crane lift over the house or roofline, which can add time and cost to the installation.

The good news is that this is something we manage all the time. Our team has installed over 2,000 fibreglass pools across South East Melbourne, Bayside, and the Mornington Peninsula, and tight access is one of the most common challenges we work with. We’ll assess your access during the site visit and let you know exactly what’s involved.

Pool Safety in Small Backyards

Pool safety requirements apply to every pool in Victoria, regardless of size. That means compliant pool fencing, self-closing and self-latching gates, and clear zones around the barrier so that objects like outdoor furniture, play equipment, or garden structures can’t be used as climbing aids. You can read the full requirements on the Victorian Building Authority website.

In a small backyard, fence placement needs extra thought because every centimetre counts. Our team can advise on the most space-efficient fencing layout during your site visit, and we work with trusted fencing specialists who understand the requirements.
